Memorial Maintenance

I visited the 9/11 Memorial in downtown New York just before midnight on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the attacks (didn’t realize it closed). The fountains had recently been shut off and there was a team of workers on site preparing for the following day. I couldn’t get close and only had my phone with me for a camera, but it was a moment I felt worth sharing.

Yes, we can argue about how much the memorial costs to operate (a lot) and that these workers get paid (assume they do!), but this team was working through the night to make sure everything was perfect for the following day’s ceremonies and photo ops.

Their pictures weren’t in the paper this morning.

In the 15 minutes I stood there he didn’t get very far with the blowtorch.
